General Counselling

Evelyn’s practice is informed by formal training in Gestalt Therapy, Mindfulness and Somatic Experiencing.
Gestalt Therapy is a “relational therapy” which is based on a recognition that healing and recovery take place in the context of a safe relationship and that it is in relationship in which that our patterns are expressed and that new patterns can be established.
Mindfulness honours the wisdom of being in the present, being open and curious about what is and a recognition that change occurs in the context of our willingness and capacity to be with what is.
Somatic Experiencing, folded in with these two frameworks, brings in “bottom up” interventions which, in contrast to more traditional psychology, prioritises what shows up in the body (which is where we experience distress).  We know that when our bodies (and our emotions which we experience in our bodies) are regulated, we think more clearly and have better access to judgment and decision making processes.  When we are emotionally regulated and grounded, our thinking naturally is adaptive, self-supporting and balanced .
